We are all aware of the importance of optimistic
thinking. But why do we have to think positively all of the time?
The solution is straightforward. Negative thinking and
the other sentiments that might accompany it, such as pessimism, tension, and
anger, can cause a variety of bodily symptoms as well as raise your risk of
diseases and a shorter lifetime. Positivity, on the other hand, appears to be
linked to a longer lifespan, improved health, and a stronger immune system.
Being positive has been demonstrated to improve our ability to cope with
sicknesses and increase our tolerance to physical disorders.
However, positive thinking isn't a magic bullet that will
solve all of your difficulties. It will make challenges appear more manageable
and assist you in approaching difficulties more positively and productively. In
today's environment, there is a great deal of stress placed on remaining
optimistic. Various studies have drawn results demonstrating the advantages of
maintaining a positive attitude throughout one's life.
Is it, however, acceptable to think only positive
thoughts all of the time? No, because positive thinking has some bad
consequences in our lives, and the subject is interesting.
A concept is known as 'Toxic Positivity' has just
recently gained popularity. Being optimistic is admirable, but repressing your
feelings to appear optimistic is harmful. Toxic optimism is a compulsion to
think positively. It is the concept that all experiences, even the most terrible,
should be viewed in a positive light. Toxic positivity can block away bad
feelings, reduce grief, and put people under pressure to act cheerful even when
they aren't.
Toxic positivity stops people from feeling their normal
emotions while ignoring the negative consequences of their actions. As humans,
we experience a wide spectrum of emotions that we must accept, feel, and
express in healthy ways. When we practice for a long time and don't acknowledge
unpleasant feelings while focusing entirely on happy ones, we can run into
significant problems with our minds. We force ourselves to feel comfortable by
rejecting reality and focusing on only a few features. Toxic positivity allows
us to ignore unpleasant emotions, which only get worse over time.
The key question now is what we should think about in a
difficult situation. We must always keep the following few principles in mind.
1. Negative
emotions must be accepted as a natural and necessary part of the human
experience.
2. Recognize
your feelings rather than attempting to escape them.
3. Discussing
emotions, particularly unpleasant feelings, with someone you trust.
4. Encourage
people to express their emotions.
5. Recognize those strong negative emotions are often accompanied by strong negative sentiments.
I have talked about Toxic Positivity and its negative
consequences. Now, one simple question may arise in our minds: what should we
think if positivity has side effects? Should we always see things in a negative
light and think negatively? Nobody will accept the concept that negative
thinking is beneficial. I only want to emphasize the importance of not
attempting to violently change a negative situation into a positive one.
Negative people should always be avoided. Various studies suggest that we may
educate our minds to be more optimistic just by being more conscious of being
positive in our communication with ourselves and others.
If you don't have anything positive to say about yourself
or others, don't participate in any negative conversations. Emotions can spread
quickly. If you're continuously around by negative people who only speak badly
of others, always focus on the worst-case scenarios, have a pessimistic
attitude about life, or constantly de-motivate themselves or others, you'll
unconsciously replicate their behavior.
